Force is a push or a pull, measured in SI as the newton (N). One newton is the force needed to accelerate one kilogram at one meter per second squared. A handy anchor: a medium apple held in your hand presses down with about one newton, which is roughly what Newton’s famous fruit would have weighed.

The kilogram-force and pound-force exist because people naturally think of weight in mass units. A “kilogram of force” is simply the weight of one kilogram under standard gravity.
This is the root of the most common confusion in physics: weight is a force, mass is not. A 1 kg bag of flour has a mass of 1 kg anywhere in the universe, but its weight is about 9.8 N on Earth, 1.6 N on the Moon, and zero in free fall. Bathroom scales blur the line by displaying kilograms, but what they actually sense is the force you press on them.
Which is why the kilogram-force is quietly a unit with an assumption baked into it. It is defined at standard gravity, 9.80665 m/s², a number chosen by international agreement in 1901 rather than measured anywhere in particular. Real gravity varies by about half a percent across the Earth’s surface, weaker at the equator and on high ground, stronger near the poles. Trade scales are calibrated for the region they are sold into for exactly this reason: the same mass genuinely does weigh slightly less in Quito than in Helsinki.
The dyne and the kip sit at opposite ends of the same idea. The dyne is the cgs unit, a hundred-thousandth of a newton, small enough that surface tension and insect locomotion are measured in it. The kip is a thousand pound-force, used in American structural work because building loads in plain pounds run to unwieldy numbers. Both are in the converter above, and between them they span eight orders of magnitude, which is why the fields here keep significant figures rather than decimal places.
