Aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between the width and height of an image. It is expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, such as 4:3 or 16:9.
How to calculate dimensions from an aspect ratio:
- If you know the width: Height = Width / (ratio width / ratio height)
- If you know the height: Width = Height x (ratio width / ratio height)
- Example: For a 16:9 image that is 1920 pixels wide: Height = 1920 / (16/9) = 1080 pixels

What a crop actually costs you. Whenever the target ratio differs from the source, one pair of edges gets trimmed and the pixels are gone. The arithmetic is simple: if the target is wider than the source you lose height, if it is narrower you lose width, and what survives is the largest rectangle of the new shape that fits inside the old one. Some common cases:

That last row is why a landscape video reframed for Stories looks so brutally cut: two thirds of the picture is simply not there any more. The calculator does this for any pair of ratios in the list.
Practical tips:
- When cropping a photo to a different aspect ratio, you will always lose part of the image. Frame your shots with extra space around the subject to allow for different crops.
- Social media platforms each prefer specific aspect ratios. Instagram feed posts work best at 1:1 or 4:5, while Stories and Reels use 9:16.
- 3:2 is the native ratio of most DSLR and mirrorless cameras, so printing at 4x6 inches requires no cropping.
- When resizing for screens, always maintain the aspect ratio (constrain proportions) to avoid stretching or squishing the image.
