Understanding Tablecloth Sizing

Choosing the right tablecloth size depends on your table dimensions and how far you want the cloth to hang over the edge (called the “drop”). The drop length determines the formality of the setting. A longer drop looks more elegant, while a shorter drop is more casual. Getting the right size prevents the tablecloth from being too short (looking skimpy) or too long (bunching on the floor or getting caught in chairs).

The Basic Formula:

For rectangular and square tables: Tablecloth Width = Table Width + (2 × Drop Length) Tablecloth Length = Table Length + (2 × Drop Length)

For round tables: Tablecloth Diameter = Table Diameter + (2 × Drop Length)

For oval tables, use the same formula as rectangular, measuring the longest and widest points.

The formula gives an exact number, and then you go shopping and discover that cloths come in a short list of sizes. This table does the second step for you: it takes the exact figure and rounds up to the nearest size that is genuinely on sale, for a casual 8 inch drop and a formal 12 inch drop.

Two rows land on the same cloth for both the casual and the formal drop, and that is not an error. Standard sizes are coarse. On a 60 inch round table the next cloth up from 76 inches is 84, which happens to give exactly the 12 inch formal drop anyway, so there is nothing between casual and formal to buy. On a long narrow rectangle the same thing happens: the jump from 102 to 120 inches is 18 inches of length, far more than the 8 inches of extra drop you were asking for.

Standard round cloths run 45, 52, 60, 64, 70, 72, 84, 90, 96, 108, 114, 120 and 132 inches. Rectangular cloths are sold as fixed pairs rather than any width with any length, most commonly 52x52, 52x70, 54x54, 54x72, 60x60, 60x84, 60x102, 60x120, 70x70, 70x90, 70x108, 70x120, 90x90, 90x132 and 90x156.

Tips for Buying Tablecloths:

• Measure your table carefully, including any leaf extensions you plan to use
• Round up to the nearest standard cloth size if your calculation falls between sizes
• For everyday use, a drop of 8-10 inches (20-25 cm) is the most practical
• For buffet tables, floor-length drops (28-30 inches) look professional and hide the table legs
• Consider adding 1-2 inches to your calculation to account for fabric shrinkage after washing
• Oval tablecloths can be hard to find. A rectangular cloth that matches the oval dimensions works well as an alternative.
