Ruling planets

Each sign is traditionally assigned a ruling planet. Seven of the twelve share a ruler with another sign, because the system predates the telescope and only five planets plus the Sun and Moon were known.

The three that differ are the three assigned after their planets were discovered: Uranus in 1781, Neptune in 1846, Pluto in 1930. Astrologers still disagree about whether to use the modern or the traditional rulers, and Pluto’s 2006 reclassification as a dwarf planet did not settle it.

Compatibility by element

The usual rule of thumb pairs signs that share an element, or that sit in complementary elements: fire with air, and earth with water. Fire and air are the outward, active pair; earth and water are the inward, receptive pair. Signs in opposing elements, fire with water or earth with air, are the traditional friction pairings.

Why the dates shift by a day

The signs are not calendar months. Each begins when the Sun reaches a particular point on the ecliptic, and because the year is not a whole number of days, that moment drifts through the calendar and gets pulled back by leap years. The Sun enters Aries somewhere between 19 and 21 March depending on the year.

So the ranges above are the conventional ones, accurate for most years, and anyone born within a day of a boundary should check an ephemeris for their birth year and time rather than trust a fixed table. Being born “on the cusp” is not a real astrological category, but landing on the wrong side of a table that ignores your birth year is a genuine possibility.

One further point worth knowing: these are the tropical signs used in Western astrology, which are tied to the seasons rather than to the constellations. Because the Earth’s axis wobbles, the constellations have drifted roughly one sign backwards since the system was fixed about two thousand years ago. Sidereal astrology, used in India, tracks the constellations instead, which is why the same birthday gives a different sign there.
