Queen rearing follows a precise biological schedule. From the moment a fertilized egg is laid (or a larva is grafted into a queen cup), the development milestones are fixed by honeybee biology.

Complete queen development (from egg):

Grafting method (most common):

When you graft, you are transferring a 12–24 hour old larva into a queen cup. Since grafting uses a Day 4 larva (1 day old larva), the timeline from graft day is:

Queen cells capped = Graft day + 4 days Queen emerges = Graft day + 12 days Mating flights = Graft day + 17–20 days Laying begins = Graft day + 21–24 days

Those offsets are the whole-development table above with four days taken off, because grafting starts you at Day 4 rather than Day 1. Cells capped at Day 8 becomes graft plus 4, emergence at Day 16 becomes graft plus 12, and laying at Day 25 to 28 becomes graft plus 21 to 24. If a figure here does not come out four days below the table, one of them is wrong.

Worked example:

If you graft on May 1st:

  • Queen cells capped: May 5 (Day +4)
  • Move cells to mating nucs: May 11 (Day +10)
  • Virgin queens emerge: May 13 (Day +12)
  • Mating flights begin: May 18–21 (Day +17–20)
  • Earliest eggs possible: May 22 (Day +21)
  • Check for eggs: May 28 (Day +27, allowing for a spell of bad flying weather)
  • Mark and cage queens: May 31 (Day +30, once laying confirmed)

The gap between the earliest possible eggs and when you should actually go looking is deliberate. Opening a nuc to check on a virgin queen that has not mated yet is the classic way to lose her, and a week of rain can push mating flights back on its own. Wait for the later date unless something else tells you to look.

Critical factors for success:

  • Temperature: Mating flights require above 65°F (18°C) and low wind
  • Drone availability: Drones must be sexually mature (at least 12 days post-emergence). Ensure drone colonies are set up 6+ weeks before grafting.
  • Grafting age: Use larvae under 24 hours old (just hatched from egg). Older larvae produce inferior queens with fewer ovarioles.
  • Cell builder strength: The cell builder colony should have at least 2 frames of open brood and be queenless or use a Cloake board.

Acceptance rates: Expect 60–80% acceptance on your first grafts. Experienced grafters achieve 85–95% acceptance.

Why the walk-away split is quicker and worse

A split does not start the clock at an egg. There are already larvae in the frames, and the workers pick one and build an emergency cell around it, so the cell is capped four or five days after the split rather than eight, and a virgin emerges around day 12 rather than day 16. The calculator uses the shorter schedule for that reason.

The catch is which larva they pick. Left to themselves in an emergency the bees will use larvae up to three days old, and a three-day-old larva has already spent time on worker food rather than royal jelly. That queen has fewer ovarioles and a shorter laying life than one grafted at under a day old. This is exactly why people learn to graft: not to save time, which grafting does not, but to control the age of the larva.
