Winter Stores Assessment

Monitoring hive weight is one of the most reliable ways to assess colony health and winter survival prospects. A colony needs sufficient honey stores to survive the winter when foraging is impossible.

Key Weights

A standard Langstroth hive has known component weights:

  • Deep box (empty): ~5 kg (11 lbs)
  • Medium super (empty): ~3.5 kg (7.7 lbs)
  • Bottom board: ~2.5 kg (5.5 lbs)
  • Inner cover + outer cover: ~4 kg (8.8 lbs)
  • 10 deep frames with drawn comb (empty): ~4 kg (8.8 lbs)
  • Bees (full colony): ~2–3 kg (4.4–6.6 lbs)

Honey Store Calculation

Honey Stores (kg) = Total Hive Weight − Empty Equipment Weight − Bee Weight

The empty equipment weight is those components added up, and it depends on how your hive is stacked:

Those totals used to be 11.5, 20.5, 18 and 22, which did not add up from the component list above them: the single-deep figure left the frames out entirely, and the double-deep one counted a single box worth of comb for two boxes. Equipment weight comes straight off the reading, so a 4 kg error there is a 4 kg error in your stores.

A full deep frame of capped honey weighs about 3.6 kg (8 lbs), and a full medium frame about 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs), matching the honey yield estimator.

Winter Consumption Rates

Consumption depends heavily on climate:

The last column is just the first two multiplied together, low against low and high against high. It used to be a separate set of figures that did not follow from its own row: the mild row read 8–12 kg where 2–3 kg a month over 2–3 months cannot exceed 9.

The cold row lands on 20–42 kg, which is 45–90 lbs, and that is the same range the honey yield estimator quotes for a cold-climate winter. The winter cluster calculator works the same figure out from the size of the cluster instead of the calendar, and the two agree.

Worked Example

Total hive weight: 50 kg. Equipment (double deep, from the table above): 24.5 kg. Bees: 2.5 kg. Honey stores = 50 − 24.5 − 2.5 = 23.0 kg

In a moderate climate consuming 3.5 kg/month over 5 months = 17.5 kg needed. Surplus: 23.0 − 17.5 = 5.5 kg, comfortably past the 4 kg mark the calculator calls well stocked.

Notice how much the equipment figure matters. Weigh the same hive at 50 kg and call the equipment 20.5 instead of 24.5, and you would read 27 kg of stores rather than 23, which is more than a month of feeding you do not actually have.

If stores fall below the needed amount, consider feeding 2:1 sugar syrup (in fall) or fondant/candy boards (in winter). Weigh hives monthly or use a hive scale for continuous monitoring. A sudden weight drop of more than 1 kg in a week during winter may indicate a problem.
