How Bee Winter Cluster Size Is Calculated

When ambient temperatures drop below about 14°C (57°F), honey bees form a tight cluster to conserve heat. The cluster’s size directly determines whether the colony can maintain the critical core temperature of 34-36°C (93-97°F) needed for survival.

Cluster weight from frame coverage:

Cluster_Weight_kg = Frames_Covered × Bees_per_Frame × Bee_Weight

A standard Langstroth deep frame holds approximately 2,500 bees per side when loosely clustered (5,000 per frame at full coverage). Each bee weighs roughly 0.1 grams (100 mg).

Shallower frames hold proportionally fewer, scaled by comb depth against the deep:

Those two lower figures used to be 3,800 and 2,500, which are not the depth ratios and made a medium frame look 11% fuller than it is while shortchanging a shallow by 15%.

Cluster diameter (spherical approximation):

Volume = Cluster_Weight / Cluster_Density

Diameter = (6 × Volume / π)^(1/3)

Cluster density is approximately 0.8 g/cm³ for a loosely packed cluster and 1.2 g/cm³ for a tightly packed cluster in extreme cold.

Minimum Survival Thresholds

Research from multiple apiaries shows these approximate minimums:

Worked Example

A colony covering 6 frames in a moderate climate:

  • Bees: 6 × 5,000 = 30,000 bees
  • Cluster weight: 30,000 × 0.0001 kg = 3.0 kg
  • Volume (loose): 3,000 / 0.8 = 3,750 cm³
  • Diameter: (6 × 3,750 / π)^(1/3) = 19.3 cm
  • Minimum required for moderate climate: 1.5 kg
  • Result: Colony is well above the survival threshold

Honey Consumption

Consumption scales with the size of the cluster, but it also scales with how hard the cluster has to work to hold 34°C. A colony in Minnesota burns far more per kilo of bees than the same colony in Georgia, so a single flat rate cannot describe both.

These are calibrated so that a typical 2 kg overwintering cluster consumes what the hive weight monitor expects month by month, which is how the two pages come out with the same answer for the same winter. A 2 kg cluster through a 6-month cold winter needs 2 × 2.5 × 6 = 30 kg, and 36 kg (79 lbs) once you add the 20% safety margin the calculator applies. That sits inside the 60–90 lb figure quoted for a cold-climate winter across the rest of the site.

This page previously used a flat 1 kg per kg per month for every climate, which put the same colony at 14 kg and would have starved it.
