Guideline Spacing

How calligraphy guidelines work:

Calligraphy scripts are proportioned in units of the nib width (the width of the broad-edge pen). Each script has a defined number of nib widths for the x-height (body of lowercase letters), ascender height, and descender depth.

The four guideline lines:

  1. Ascender line: top of tall letters (b, d, f, h, k, l)
  2. Waist line (x-height), top of short letters (a, c, e, m, n)
  3. Base line: where all letters sit
  4. Descender line: bottom of hanging letters (g, j, p, q, y)

Nib width ratios by script:

Ascenders are counted above the x-height line. Every calligraphy calculator on this site uses this one table, so the same nib and script give the same answer wherever you land.

nw = nib widths. These are centres of a range rather than fixed law. Italic ascenders are taught anywhere between 3 and 4 nib widths and Gothic between 2 and 3, and either end looks correct. Consistency down the page matters more than the exact figure.

*Copperplate is the odd one out. A flexible pointed nib has no fixed width to count, so the starred row treats whatever you enter as an x-height unit for comparison. In practice you choose the x-height in millimetres and rule a 55° slant grid, keeping a 3:2:3 relationship between ascender, x-height and descender.

Spacing formulas:

X-height (mm) = Nib width (mm) × X-height ratio

Ascender height (mm) = Nib width (mm) × Ascender ratio

Descender depth (mm) = Nib width (mm) × Descender ratio

Letter zone = Ascender + X-height + Descender

The letter zone is also the tightest the baselines can get: any closer and one row’s descenders run into the next row’s ascenders. For readable text add one x-height on top, half an x-height for something dense, two for something airy.

Baseline to baseline = Letter zone + 1 x-height

Worked example:

Italic script with a 2mm nib:

  • X-height: 2mm × 5 = 10mm
  • Ascenders: 2mm × 3.5 = 7mm above x-height, so 17mm above the baseline
  • Descenders: 2mm × 3.5 = 7mm below baseline
  • Letter zone: 7 + 10 + 7 = 24mm, the absolute minimum baseline to baseline
  • Comfortable interline gap: one x-height = 10mm
  • Baseline to baseline: 24 + 10 = 34mm

On an A4 page (297mm tall):

  • Usable height: 297 - 40 (top/bottom margins) = 257mm
  • Lines per page: 257 ÷ 34 = 7 lines

Quick tip: to find your nib width, make a small “ladder” of horizontal strokes stacked directly on top of each other. Count the strokes that fit in your desired x-height, and that number is the nib-width ratio.
