The nib-width ratio system

In traditional calligraphy, letter proportions are defined by the width of the pen nib.
The x-height (the height of lowercase letters like “a”, “o”, “x”) is measured in nib widths: the number of times you can stack the nib’s own width to reach the letter height.

Formula:

X-height = Nib width × Nib-width ratio

Ascender height = Nib width × Ascender ratio

Descender depth = Nib width × Descender ratio

Nib-width ratios by script

Ascenders here are counted above the x-height line, not from the baseline, which is the convention most teaching books use. The final column gives the same measurement from the baseline for anyone whose reference states it that way. Every calligraphy page on this site uses this one table, so the numbers agree wherever you land.

Treat these as centres, not laws. Italic ascenders are taught anywhere from 3 to 4 nib widths, Gothic from 2 to 3, and a page ruled at either end still looks like the script. What matters far more is picking one and holding it down the whole page.

Copperplate is the exception, and it is worth understanding why. It is written with a flexible pointed nib whose width changes under pressure, so there is no fixed nib width to count. Copperplate is ruled by choosing an x-height in millimetres directly, usually with a 3:2:3 relationship between ascender, x-height and descender, plus a 55° slant grid. The calculator applies that 3:2:3 shape at 5 units to the x-height if you pick it, which matches the other pages here, but the nib-width system is not really what that script uses.

Worked example, Italic script with a 2 mm nib

X-height = 2 mm × 5 = 10 mm Ascender = 2 mm × 3.5 = 7 mm above the x-height line, so 17 mm above the baseline Descender = 2 mm × 3.5 = 7 mm below the baseline Letter zone = 7 + 10 + 7 = 24 mm

How to measure your nib width: hold the broad-edge nib at 90° to the writing line and draw a short horizontal stroke, then measure that stroke’s thickness. That is your nib width. Common sizes run 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 5 and 6 mm.

Ruling your paper: draw four lines per text row: descender line, baseline, x-height (waist) line and ascender line. Baseline to baseline, the letter zone above is the absolute minimum before one row’s descenders touch the next row’s ascenders. Add one x-height on top for comfortable text, half an x-height if you want it dense, two if you want it airy.

Common nib brands and sizes:

  • Brause: 0.5mm to 5mm
  • Mitchell: sizes 0 (broadest, ~4mm) to 6 (narrowest, ~0.7mm)
  • Speedball C-series: C-0 (~5mm) to C-6 (~0.75mm)
  • Pilot Parallel: 1.5mm, 2.4mm, 3.8mm, 6mm
