Calligraphy Practice Sheet Layout Calculator

A well-designed calligraphy practice sheet uses guidelines based on your nib width and the script you are practicing. Different calligraphy hands have specific proportions defined in nib widths (nw).

Core Formula: X-height (mm) = Nib Width (mm) × Nib Width Ratio

The x-height is the height of lowercase letters like “a”, “o”, “x”. Ascenders and descenders extend above and below.

Script Proportions (in nib widths):

Ascenders are counted above the x-height line. Every calligraphy calculator here uses this one table, so the same nib and script give the same guidelines whichever page you open. All six are in the dropdown.

Copperplate and Spencerian are pointed-pen scripts, so they have no true nib width. The figures above treat your entered width as the x-height unit for comparison, but in practice you pick an x-height in millimetres and rule a slant grid to match.

Line Spacing: The letter zone is already the tightest the baselines can sit, since below it one row’s descenders meet the next row’s ascenders. The interline gap is what you add on top. One x-height reads comfortably, half an x-height gives a dense block, two gives an airy one.

Lines per Page: Lines = (Paper Height - Top Margin - Bottom Margin) / (Letter zone + Interline Gap)

Worked Example, Italic script, 2mm nib, A4 paper:

• X-height: 2 × 5 = 10 mm
• Ascender: 2 × 3.5 = 7 mm
• Descender: 2 × 3.5 = 7 mm
• Letter zone: 24 mm
• Interline gap (one x-height): 10 mm
• Line pitch: 24 + 10 = 34 mm
• A4 height: 297 mm, margins: 20 mm top + 20 mm bottom
• Usable height: 257 mm
• Lines per page: 257 / 34 = 7 lines per page

• Top margin: 15–25 mm (space for header or date)
• Bottom margin: 15–25 mm
• Left margin: 20–30 mm (enough for a straight left edge reference)
• Right margin: 10–15 mm

Practice sheets work best printed with light gray guidelines (10–20% black) so the ink stands out clearly against the lines.
