Baseboard / Trim Calculator

Baseboard and trim are measured in linear feet (or linear meters), the total length of molding needed to run along the base of your walls. Accurate measurement prevents costly over-ordering or frustrating mid-project shortages.

Formula: Total Linear Feet = Room Perimeter − Door Openings − Floor-to-Ceiling Windows Room Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Width) (for rectangular rooms) Pieces Needed = (Total Linear Feet × Waste Factor) ÷ Board Length, rounded up Waste Factor: add 10% for cuts, miters, and waste. Ornate profiles and a room full of corners want 15%, and the box above takes whichever you want rather than assuming.

That box is worth a moment, because it is the one number on this page that is a judgement rather than a measurement. Ten per cent covers ordinary mitres and one bad cut. Fifteen is right if the profile is ornate, if the room has more than four corners, or if you are coping the inside corners instead of mitring them, since a coped joint takes two attempts more often than it takes one. The baseboard trim length calculator defaults to 15% for that reason and works a single room at a time; this page takes a perimeter you have already added up and subtracts openings by count and average width, which suits a whole floor.

For non-rectangular rooms: Total = Sum of all wall lengths − sum of all opening widths

What each variable means:

• Room Perimeter: the total distance around the base of the walls.
• Door Openings: standard interior door width: 32–36 inches (81–91 cm). Subtract each doorway’s clear opening width, baseboard stops at the door casing.
• Board Length: baseboard is stocked in 8-ft (2.44 m), 12-ft (3.66 m) and 16-ft (4.88 m) lengths, and the calculator gives you the piece count for all three. Longer boards mean fewer joints on a long wall, but a 16-footer will not go round a stairwell or into a hatchback, so check before you commit to one.
• Linear Feet vs. Square Feet: baseboard is a linear measurement (length only), not area. Don’t confuse it with flooring calculations.

Baseboard profile types:

• Colonial/Traditional: 3¼ inch height, curved profile. Most common residential style.
• Modern/Craftsman: tall flat profile, 4–6 inches. Clean contemporary look.
• Victorian/Ornate: 5–7 inch with detailed profiling. Historic homes.
• Simple/Flat: budget option, 2¼ inches. Apartments and utility spaces.

Material cost reference (2024 approximate):

• MDF baseboard: $0.50–$1.50/linear ft (paint-grade)
• Pine: $1.00–$2.00/linear ft
• Oak/hardwood: $2.00–$5.00/linear ft
• PVC/composite: $1.50–$3.00/linear ft (moisture-resistant; great for bathrooms)

Worked example: Living room: 14 ft × 18 ft = perimeter 64 ft. Two doorways at 36 inches each = 6 ft of openings. Net linear feet = 64 − 6 = 58 linear feet. With 10% waste: 58 × 1.10 = 63.8 → 64 linear feet to purchase. Using 16-ft boards: 63.8 ÷ 16 = 3.99 → 4 boards. In 12-ft lengths it is 5.3 → 6 boards, and in 8-ft lengths 7.98 → 8.

Notice how close that first one runs. Four 16-ft boards is 64 feet against a 63.8-foot requirement, which is two and a half inches of margin across the whole room. One badly cut miter and you are back at the store. If a number lands that tight, buy the extra board.
