The Grain-to-Water Ratio determines how much water you need to properly cook grains. Too little water and grains stay hard. Too much and they become mushy.

A sealed rice cooker or a pressure cooker loses less steam and wants a quarter to three quarters of a cup less per cup of rice, so use the rice cooker page for those.
Measurement Units, and the trap in them
A ratio only travels between units if both sides have the same density, and grain and water do not. A cup of dry rice weighs about 185 g while a cup of water weighs 237 g, so a 1 : 1.75 ratio by volume is 1 : 2.24 by weight. Enter grams here and the calculator converts for you rather than pretending the number is the same.
For reference: 1 cup of dry rice ≈ 185 g (6.5 oz), 1 cup of water ≈ 237 g (8.4 oz).
Practical Example: To cook 2 cups of long-grain brown rice: 2 cups × 2.25 = 4.5 cups of water. The yield will be about 6 cups of cooked rice (2 × 3x yield factor).
Altitude Adjustment: At high altitudes (above 3,000 ft / 900 m), water boils at a lower temperature. Add approximately 2–4 tablespoons extra water per cup of grain and increase cooking time by 3–5 minutes.
Tips:
- Rinsing rice before cooking removes excess starch and prevents stickiness.
- Let grains rest (covered, off heat) for 5–10 minutes after cooking for better texture.
- For meal prep, cooked grains store well in the refrigerator for 4–5 days.
- A rice cooker uses slightly less water than stovetop methods because less steam escapes.
