Your Daily Step Goal

Daily step goals should be personalized based on your current fitness level, age, and health objectives rather than blindly following the popular 10,000 steps target.

Where did 10,000 steps come from? The number originated from a 1965 Japanese marketing campaign for a pedometer called “Manpo-kei” (meaning “10,000 steps meter”). It was not based on scientific research.

What research actually shows:

  • A 2019 study in JAMA Internal Medicine followed older women, average age 72. Those walking 4,400 steps a day had 41% lower mortality than those at 2,700, and the benefit levelled off at about 7,500.
  • A 2020 study in JAMA of US adults found 8,000 steps a day carried 51% lower mortality than 4,000.
  • A 2022 analysis in The Lancet Public Health pooled 15 studies and nearly 50,000 people. The benefit levelled off at 6,000 to 8,000 steps for people 60 and over, and at 8,000 to 10,000 for younger adults.

Typical step targets by age:

  • Children (6–12): 12,000–15,000 steps per day. About 12,000 is the count linked to an hour of active play
  • Teens (13–17): 10,000–12,000 steps per day
  • Adults (18–59): 8,000–10,000 steps per day
  • Adults (60+): 6,000–8,000 steps per day

The calculator starts from the bottom of each band, because that is where the adult research says most of the benefit has already arrived.

Steps and weight loss: Walking 10,000 steps burns roughly 300–500 calories depending on body weight and pace. To lose 1 pound (0.45 kg) per week through walking alone, you would need to burn an extra 500 calories per day.

Distance equivalents: an average adult stride covers about 2.5 feet, so 1,000 steps is roughly 0.47 miles (0.76 km) and 10,000 steps works out at about 4.7 miles (7.6 km). Taller people cover more ground per step and shorter people less, which is why two people can walk the same route and log noticeably different counts.

The age figures are a floor, not a ceiling. If you already walk more than the number for your age band, the answer is not to walk less. This calculator will tell you to hold what you have rather than handing you a smaller goal, which is the mistake most step calculators make with active users.

Tip: Start with your current daily average and add about 1,000 steps a week, which is the ramp the calculator plans. Gradual increases are sustainable. Sudden jumps lead to burnout and potential injury.
