Correct chain slack (also called chain free play or chain tension) is one of the most important and most neglected aspects of motorcycle maintenance. A chain that is too tight wears rapidly and can damage the gearbox output shaft bearing. A chain that is too loose can jump off sprockets or slap against the swingarm.
Chain slack changes with suspension travel. As the rear wheel moves up and the suspension compresses, the distance between the front and rear sprocket centres increases. The chain has to find that extra length from somewhere, which is why it needs slack sitting at rest.
Why there is no clean formula for it The number in your manual is not derived from swingarm length alone. What sets it is how far the countershaft sprocket sits from the swingarm pivot, and every manufacturer places that differently. If the countershaft were exactly on the pivot the chain would never change length at all and you could run it dead tight. The further off-centre it sits, the more the sprocket centres separate as the suspension compresses, and the more free play you have to leave at rest.
That offset is not published, so no calculator can compute your slack from scratch. What the two inputs here can honestly do is place you inside the published range for your class of bike. The angle your swingarm sweeps through its travel is what decides that: more travel means a bigger sweep and more slack, a longer swingarm means a smaller sweep for the same travel and slightly less. A 300 mm-travel enduro sweeps roughly 30 degrees; a sportbike closer to 15.
Standard measurement method:
- Place the bike on the centre stand or paddock stand
- Find the tightest point of the chain by rotating the rear wheel slowly
- Measure slack at the midpoint of the lower chain run, halfway between sprockets
- Push up gently and measure the total free movement
Typical specifications by bike type:
- Motocross / enduro (250–320 mm travel): 40–60 mm (1.6–2.4 in)
- Sport / naked (100–140 mm travel): 25–40 mm (1.0–1.6 in)
- Touring / cruiser (75–120 mm travel): 20–30 mm (0.8–1.2 in)
- Road race (similar travel to a sportbike, tighter tolerance): 15–25 mm (0.6–1.0 in)
Always check your owner manual. The specification for your model overrides everything above. Some manuals also want the slack measured with a passenger sitting on the seat, which changes the number considerably, so check whether yours does before you set anything.
Lube your chain every 500 km (300 miles) or after every wet ride. A well-maintained chain lasts 25,000–40,000 km; a neglected one may fail at 10,000 km.
