Motorcycle Fuel Range Calculator
Calculate how far your motorcycle can travel on a full tank.
Enter tank size, fuel consumption, and reserve level to plan your ride.
Knowing your motorcycle’s fuel range before a long ride prevents the most avoidable breakdown there is, which is running out of petrol in the middle of nowhere. The calculation is straightforward: subtract the reserve you want to keep from your tank capacity, then multiply what is left by your fuel economy.
Formula: Range = (Tank capacity − Reserve) × Fuel economy
Typical motorcycle fuel economy, and the bands the calculator uses to guess your bike class:
| Class | Economy | Calculator band |
|---|---|---|
| Small commuters (125-300 cc) | 25-40 km/L (59-94 mpg) | 30 km/L and above |
| Middleweight nakeds and sports (400-700 cc) | 22-30 km/L (52-70 mpg) | 22 to 30 km/L |
| Adventure and touring (800-1200 cc) | 17-22 km/L (40-52 mpg) | 17 to 22 km/L |
| Cruisers and large sports | 13-17 km/L (31-40 mpg) | 13 to 17 km/L |
| Track-focused superbikes | 10-16 km/L (24-38 mpg) | below 13 km/L |
Those bands overlap in real life, which is why the calculator calls it a guess. A hard-ridden 600 and a gently ridden 1200 land in the same place.
The reserve rule: most motorcycles switch to reserve at 1 to 2 litres remaining. Never treat the reserve as planned riding range. It is an emergency buffer, and its whole value is that you have not already spent it. Plan refuel stops with 15 to 20% of the tank still in there.
Factors that reduce range:
- High speed. Aerodynamic drag rises with the square of speed, so 130 km/h costs roughly 40% more fuel than 90 km/h
- Heavy loads and luggage
- Strong headwinds
- Aggressive acceleration and braking
- Cold weather (fuel is denser but engines run richer)
- Mountainous terrain
Planning tip: For a ride of 250 km, calculate your minimum range needed with a 20% buffer: 250 × 1.2 = 300 km. If your bike’s range is under 300 km, plan a fuel stop.
