Diaper Cost Calculator
Estimate how many diapers your baby needs and total cost through potty training.
Compare disposable vs. cloth diaper expenses.
Diaper costs represent one of the largest recurring expenses in a baby’s first three years. The key variables are diaper type, usage frequency (which changes with age), and price per unit. Understanding the math lets parents budget accurately and identify the real cost of premium vs. budget brands.
Total diaper cost formula:
Total Cost = Daily Diapers × Days × Cost per Diaper
For the full diaper-wearing period across multiple stages:
Lifetime Cost = Σ (Diapers/Day × Days in Stage × Cost per Diaper in Stage)
Where:
- Diapers/Day: this changes a lot with age. Newborns go through 10 to 12 a day, toddlers 4 to 6
- Days in Stage: how long each age bracket lasts
- Cost per Diaper: varies by brand and size, and larger sizes cost more each
- Σ = sum across all stages
Average daily diaper usage by age:
- Newborn (0–1 month): 10–12 diapers/day
- 1–5 months: 8–10 diapers/day
- 5–9 months: 6–8 diapers/day
- 9–18 months: 5–6 diapers/day
- 18–36 months: 4–5 diapers/day (until potty trained)
The calculator uses one figure for each month of age: 11 a day in the first two months, 9 up to 6 months, 7 up to 13 months, 6 up to 19, 5 up to 25, 4 up to 31 and 3 after that, with every month counted as 30 days.
Average cost per diaper by brand tier:
- Budget (store brand): $0.12–$0.18
- Mid-range (Luvs, Kirkland): $0.18–$0.24
- Premium (Pampers, Huggies): $0.25–$0.35
- Organic/eco: $0.35–$0.55
These per-diaper prices and the cloth figures are rough ranges that vary by brand, store, region, and year. Enter your own cost per diaper, cloth set cost, and washing cost in the calculator for numbers that match what you pay.
Worked example:
Parent uses Pampers ($0.28/diaper) from birth to potty training at 30 months, which is what the calculator gives for an age of 0 and a training age of 30.
- First 2 months: 11/day × 60 days = 660 diapers
- Months 2 to 6: 9/day × 120 days = 1,080
- Months 6 to 13: 7/day × 210 days = 1,470
- Months 13 to 19: 6/day × 180 days = 1,080
- Months 19 to 25: 5/day × 180 days = 900
- Months 25 to 30: 4/day × 150 days = 600
That is 5,790 diapers, and 5,790 × $0.28 = $1,621.20 in diapers alone, before wipes, rash cream, or diaper pail bags.
Switching to a store brand at $0.15/diaper reduces this to $868.50, a saving of about $750 across the whole diaper-wearing period.
