Pet grooming cost comes down to two numbers you already have and one you have to look up: how often the coat needs doing, what your groomer charges, and what the add-ons cost. This calculator asks for the prices rather than assuming them, because grooming rates move every year and vary enormously by city. A full groom that runs $65 in a small town is $120 in Manhattan for the same dog.

Annual grooming cost formula: Annual Cost = Cost per Session × Sessions per Year

Sessions per year is 52 divided by your grooming interval in weeks. Every 6 weeks works out to 9 visits, not 8, which is the arithmetic most people get wrong when they budget.

Cats generally cost more per session than a dog of similar weight, not less. The session is shorter but harder, and a cat that needs sedation is a vet visit rather than a groomer visit.

A matted coat is the one charge that catches people out. Most groomers bill dematting by the quarter hour, $15 to $25 each, and a badly matted dog can add an hour. If the mats are tight to the skin the answer is a shave-down, which is cheaper and kinder than an hour of pulling.

Worked example: Medium Goldendoodle, 45 lbs, curly coat, full groom every 6 weeks. The local quote is $75 for the groom, $10 for teeth, $12 for nails.

• Cost per session: 75 + 10 + 12 = $97
• Sessions per year: 52 ÷ 6 = 9 sessions
• Annual cost: 9 × $97 = $873/year, about $73 a month
• DIY alternative: roughly $120 of kit up front and $70 a year in shampoo and blades, so $190 in year one. That saves around $680, and costs you two hours a session plus a real learning curve. Doodle coats are the hardest to do at home; a smooth-coated Beagle is the easiest.

Stretching the same dog from 6 weeks to 8 drops it to 7 visits and $679. Whether that is wise depends on the coat, not the budget: a curly coat left 8 weeks usually mats, and the dematting charge eats the saving.
