Driving time estimation goes beyond simple distance ÷ speed. Real-world trips involve traffic, road type variations, mandatory rest stops, fuel stops, and the difference between highway cruising speed and urban stop-and-go driving.
Base driving time formula:
Drive Time = Distance ÷ Average Speed
Total trip time with stops:
Total Trip Time = Drive Time + Stop Time
Stop Time = (Fuel Stops × 15 min) + (Rest Stops × Duration) + (Meal Stops × Duration)
Recommended stop frequency:
- Fuel stops: every 250–350 miles for a typical gasoline car, depending on tank size and economy
- Rest breaks: at least every 2 hours of driving, which is the standard road-safety recommendation
- Legal driving limits (commercial drivers, FMCSA): 11 hours of driving maximum, a 14-hour duty window, and a 30-minute break after 8 hours. These do not bind you in a private car, but they exist because that is roughly where a professional driver’s judgment starts measurably degrading.
Worked example. Dallas to Chicago, about 925 miles, in a car that goes 300 miles between fill-ups:
- Highway average: 65 mph
- Base drive time: 925 ÷ 65 = 14h 14m
- Fuel stops: 925 ÷ 300 needs 4 tanks, so 3 stops on the road, at 15 minutes each = 45 minutes
- Rest and meal stops: 3 × 30 min = 90 minutes
- Total: 14h 14m + 45m + 90m = 16h 29m
Type those five numbers into the boxes above and you will get 16h 29m back. That is more than a legal shift for a commercial driver, and it is why this trip is normally split across two days with an overnight around Springfield or St. Louis.
Speed adjustments by road type:

Use the average for the whole trip, not the speed limit. A 400-mile drive that is 350 miles of interstate and 50 miles of city traffic does not average 70.
Electric vehicles. Set the range box to 150–250 miles and the stop time to 30–45 minutes for a DC fast charge, and the arithmetic changes character completely. The same Dallas to Chicago run at a 220-mile range needs 4 charging stops instead of 3 fuel stops, and at 35 minutes each that is 2h 20m of charging rather than 45 minutes of pumping. Plan around charger locations with PlugShare or A Better Route Planner before you rely on the number.
The result also carries a 10% buffer line. Traffic, construction, and the fact that nobody actually stops for exactly 20 minutes all pull in the same direction, and on a long day that buffer is closer to right than the clean number is.
