International Call Cost Calculator

International calling cost is the per-minute rate to the destination multiplied by the minutes, and the whole game is which rate you end up paying. The same call to the same number can cost fifteen times as much on your phone company’s international rate as it does through an app.

Basic cost formula: Call Cost = Duration in Minutes × Per-Minute Rate

Enter the rates you are actually being charged. This page deliberately does not carry a rate table into the arithmetic, because international rates change constantly, differ by carrier and by plan, and a number frozen into a web page is wrong within months. Your carrier’s rate is on your bill or on their international-rates page, and a VoIP app shows it before it connects the call.

The three ways to place the call

• Standard carrier: your phone company’s own international rate, dialling normally. Almost always the most expensive of the three, sometimes by an order of magnitude.
• Calling card or dial-around service: a prepaid card or an access number you dial first. Cheap per minute, and the catch is in the fine print: connection fees, rounding to three-minute blocks, and maintenance charges that eat an unused balance.
• VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol): Skype, Google Voice, WhatsApp, and so on. App-to-app calls are free. App-to-landline or app-to-mobile is billed, and it is normally the cheapest paid option.

Rough guide to what you will find, in US dollars from a US carrier. It is here so you can tell whether a quoted rate is sane, not so you can skip looking yours up:

Worked example: A 40-minute call to India, with the rates entered as $0.25 carrier, $0.02 card and $0.015 VoIP:

• Carrier: 40 × $0.25 = $10.00
• Calling card: 40 × $0.02 = $0.80
• VoIP: 40 × $0.015 = $0.60

One call a week for a year is $520 on the carrier rate and $31 on VoIP. That is the entire argument, and it is why the first thing to check is whether the person you are calling can install the same app, because app to app the call is free and none of these numbers apply at all.

The billing detail nobody reads: most carriers and most cards round each call up to the next whole minute, and some cards round up to three. A 30-second call can be billed as a full minute, so ten short calls cost the same as ten long ones. Most VoIP services bill per second after a small connection charge. On short frequent calls that difference matters more than the headline rate does.
