Pet weight conversion is simple arithmetic between kilograms and pounds, but it comes up constantly for a practical reason: vets, food labels, and medication doses don’t all use the same unit.

The conversion:

• 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly, which is the legal definition rather than an approximation
• 1 kg = 2.2046 lbs

Dog breed ranges:

• Chihuahua: 2-6 lbs (0.9-2.7 kg)
• Yorkshire Terrier: 4-7 lbs (1.8-3.2 kg)
• Pug: 14-18 lbs (6.3-8.2 kg)
• Beagle: 20-30 lbs (9.1-13.6 kg)
• Border Collie: 31-44 lbs (14-20 kg)
• Labrador Retriever: 55-80 lbs (25-36 kg)
• German Shepherd: 50-90 lbs (22.7-40.8 kg)
• Great Dane: 110-175 lbs (50-79 kg)

Cat breed ranges:

• Siamese: 6-10 lbs (2.7-4.5 kg)
• Persian: 7-12 lbs (3.2-5.4 kg)
• Average domestic cat: 8-11 lbs (3.6-5 kg)
• Maine Coon: 10-25 lbs (4.5-11.3 kg)

Dosing is the reason this conversion matters. Most veterinary medications, including flea and worming treatments, are dosed by body weight in milligrams per kilogram, while many owners picture their pet in pounds. Convert wrong and you either under-dose, which does nothing, or over-dose, which in a small animal has very little margin to absorb the error. A 4 kg cat given the dose meant for a 4 lb cat receives more than twice what was intended.

The calculator will do the milligram arithmetic if you give it a dose rate, but treat that as a check on your own sum rather than an instruction. Read the label, and ask the vet. Three specific traps are worth naming: a misplaced decimal point is a tenfold error and small animals do not survive many of those; several drugs that are routine for dogs, permethrin flea treatments above all, are seriously toxic to cats; and paracetamol, which sits in every human medicine cabinet, kills cats at doses a person would not notice.

Treat the breed ranges as guides, not targets. A healthy weight depends on the individual animal’s frame, and the better test is body condition. You should be able to feel the ribs easily under a thin covering, without seeing them standing out. When in doubt, a vet’s assessment beats any chart.
