Lunar Return Calculator

A lunar return occurs when the transiting moon returns to the exact zodiac sign (and ideally the exact degree) it occupied at the moment of your birth. Because the moon orbits the Earth in approximately 27.3 days (the sidereal period), you experience a lunar return roughly once every month. This is different from the more commonly known solar return, which happens once a year when the sun returns to its birth position.

The moon moves through all 12 zodiac signs during each orbit. Since there are 12 signs and the orbit takes about 27.3 days, the moon spends roughly 2.28 days (about 2 days and 6.6 hours) in each sign. This rapid movement is why the moon sign is considered one of the most dynamic placements in astrology.

How this page works it out

It counts forward from a fixed reference: at noon UTC on 1 January 2024 the moon’s mean longitude was 162.6 degrees, which puts it at 12.6 degrees of Virgo. From there it advances by one sign every 2.277 days, wraps at twelve, and reports how far that leaves it from the sign you entered.

Worth being blunt about what that does and does not give you. It is mean motion, which means it treats the moon as travelling at a constant speed. The real orbit is elliptical, so the moon runs fast near perigee and slow near apogee, and the gap between the two can reach several hours by the time it matters. For a sign, that is fine. For a degree, or for casting an actual return chart, it is not, and you want an ephemeris.

Why it is not the same as your star sign

The sun sign everybody knows comes from the date alone. The moon sign needs the time and the place as well, because the moon changes sign every two and a bit days rather than every month. Two people born on the same day in the same city, six hours apart, can have different moon signs. That is why this page asks you for the moon sign rather than working it out from a birthday.

What astrologers do with it

A lunar return chart is cast for the exact moment the moon comes back to its natal position, and it is read as the emotional weather for the month ahead. In practice most people use it more loosely: a moon in Cancer might notice the pull toward home getting louder, a moon in Capricorn a sudden appetite for getting the accounts in order.

You get about thirteen of these a year, and each one lasts roughly 2.3 days while the moon crosses your sign. Thirteen is worth sitting with. A solar return is a birthday, one a year, and people build meaning around it. Thirteen of anything is closer to a rhythm than an event, which is arguably the more useful way to read them.
