Birth Chart Elements Calculator

In Western astrology, birth chart element balance analyzes how your ten planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) are distributed across the four classical elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. Each planet is assigned to a zodiac sign, and each sign belongs to one element.

Element assignments by sign:

• Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
• Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
• Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
• Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Core formula: Element Count = Number of planets in signs of that element Element Percentage = Element Count ÷ 10 × 100

Weighted approach (optional): Some astrologers assign heavier weight to the Sun (3 points), Moon (2 points), and Ascendant sign (2 points) since these are the most influential chart factors.

What this calculator does: it uses the weighted “big three” shortcut, scoring your Sun sign at 50%, Moon sign at 30%, and Rising sign at 20%. You only need those three placements, not a full 10-planet chart. For the full-chart tally, count your planets per element with the basic formula above.

Weighted Total = Σ(Planet Weight × Element Assignment) Weighted Percentage = Element Weighted Total ÷ Total Weight Points × 100

What each variable means:

• Planet Count per Element: a simple tally of how many of the ten standard planets fall in signs of each element.
• Total points: in the basic method, always 10 (one per planet); in weighted methods, the sum of all assigned weights.
• Dominant Element: the element with the highest count or weighted score; strongly flavors personality.
• Missing or Weak Element: an element with 0 or 1 planets, indicating a potential blind spot or area of growth.

Worked example: Chart with planets in: Sun (Aries/Fire), Moon (Cancer/Water), Mercury (Taurus/Earth), Venus (Pisces/Water), Mars (Leo/Fire), Jupiter (Scorpio/Water), Saturn (Capricorn/Earth), Uranus (Aquarius/Air), Neptune (Capricorn/Earth), Pluto (Scorpio/Water).

Fire: Sun, Mars = 2 planets (20%) Earth: Mercury, Saturn, Neptune = 3 planets (30%) Air: Uranus = 1 planet (10%) Water: Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Pluto = 4 planets (40%) ← dominant

Interpretation reference:

• Fire dominant: enthusiastic, action-oriented, inspirational, can be impulsive
• Earth dominant: practical, grounded, patient, can be rigid
• Air dominant: communicative, intellectual, social, can be detached
• Water dominant: intuitive, empathetic, emotionally deep, can be sensitive

A missing element (0 planets) is considered a significant chart signature and traditionally suggests life lessons around that element’s themes.

One caution about missing elements in the big-three shortcut

Three placements cannot fill four elements. Whatever your Sun, Moon and Rising signs are, at least one element comes out at zero, and if two of the three share an element then two come out at zero. That is arithmetic, not a chart signature.

So read an empty element here as “not represented in your big three” and nothing stronger. A genuinely missing element is a claim about all ten planets, and only the full-chart tally at the top of this page can support it. The shortcut is good for the question it does answer, which is which of the four your most visible placements lean toward.

What the spread means

Since the three weights are 50, 30 and 20, only a handful of totals are possible. All three in one element gives a single 100. Sun and Moon together gives 80. Sun and Rising together gives 70. Moon and Rising together against a lone Sun gives 50 and 50, a genuine tie. All three apart gives 50, 30 and 20. A chart that lands on 100 is not four times more “Fire” than one that lands on 50, it simply has nothing pulling the other way in these three positions.
