How It Works
Numerology is the study of the relationship between numbers and events, personality traits, and life patterns. It has roots in ancient Greek, Babylonian, Hebrew (Gematria), and Egyptian traditions. The modern Western system most widely used today is known as Pythagorean numerology, attributed to the ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras (570–495 BC, Before Christ), who believed numbers were the fundamental language of the universe.

The three core name numbers:

Expression Number (Destiny Number): Uses all letters in your full birth name. Represents your natural abilities, what you are capable of becoming, and your life’s purpose as expressed through your talents.

Soul Urge Number (Heart’s Desire): Uses only the vowels in your name. Represents your inner motivations, what your soul craves, and the deeper “why” behind your choices.
Where this calculator stands on Y. Y is the one letter numerologists argue about, and the answer changes real results, so here is the rule in force: Y counts as a vowel only in a name part that contains no A, E, I, O or U. Flynn, Lynn and Bryn get a vowel; Mary and Kyle do not, because their Y is riding alongside a real vowel. Without that rule a name like Flynn has a Soul Urge sum of zero, which the system has no meaning for. Some practitioners count Y as a vowel whenever it sounds like one, which would give Mary a Soul Urge of 8 instead of 1. Neither convention is more official than the other. This one is at least consistent.
- Personality Number: Uses only the consonants. Represents how others perceive you, the face you show to the world and how you come across in social situations.
Reducing to a single digit: Sum all the letter values, then add the digits of the result together until you reach a single digit. Example: JOHN = J(1) + O(6) + H(8) + N(5) = 20 → 2+0 = 2.
Master Numbers: not reduced: The numbers 11, 22, and 33 are called “Master Numbers” and are kept as-is rather than reduced further.

- 3: Creativity, self-expression, enthusiasm, social connection
- 4: Stability, hard work, discipline, practicality
- 5: Freedom, change, adventure, adaptability
- 6: Harmony, responsibility, nurturing, service
- 7: Wisdom, introspection, analysis, spiritual depth
- 8: Power, abundance, ambition, material success
- 9: Compassion, universal love, completion, humanitarianism
Pythagorean vs. Chaldean: The Pythagorean system assigns numbers 1–9 to letters in alphabetical order. The older Chaldean system uses a different mapping based on sound vibration (and excludes the number 9 from letter assignments). This calculator uses the Pythagorean system, which is more widely used in Western numerology today.
