Pythagorean numerology is a system developed from the ancient Greek tradition that assigns numerical values to the letters of the alphabet. Each letter maps to a number from 1 to 9. These values are summed across a name, then repeatedly reduced (digit summing) until a single digit remains — unless the result is 11, 22, or 33, which are considered master numbers and are not reduced further.
Letter value chart (Pythagorean system): A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5, F=6, G=7, H=8, I=9 J=1, K=2, L=3, M=4, N=5, O=6, P=7, Q=8, R=9 S=1, T=2, U=3, V=4, W=5, X=6, Y=7, Z=8

Compatibility principles in numerology: Numbers that are naturally complementary tend to balance each other. A creative 3 paired with a practical 4 can be highly effective together despite their differences. Numbers that are too similar may amplify both the strengths and weaknesses of a shared energy. The difference between two numbers, measured as circular distance on the 1 to 9 wheel, is what drives the score.
How the score is actually built: Circular distance means you count the shorter way around a nine-position wheel, so the widest two numbers can ever be apart is 4, not 8. A 9 and a 2 are three steps apart going forward through 1, not seven steps going back.
| Relationship | Score |
|---|---|
| Identical numbers | 90% |
| Same root, different intensity (11 with 2, 22 with 4, 33 with 6) | 88% |
| One step apart | 85% |
| Two steps apart | 75% |
| Three steps apart | 65% |
| Four steps apart (the maximum) | 55% |
Master numbers are digit-summed before the distance is measured, so an 11 sits at position 2 on the wheel and a 22 at position 4. If either name produces a master number, 5 points are added to the final score, capped at 95%.
This calculator uses the Expression Number method — the full name is summed and reduced. In professional numerology, a complete reading would also examine Life Path numbers (from birth dates), Soul Urge numbers (vowels only), and Personality numbers (consonants only). This calculator provides one meaningful dimension of that picture.
Important note: Numerology is an ancient spiritual and philosophical tradition, not a predictive science. Compatibility scores are meant as a guide for self-reflection and conversation, not absolute judgments about relationships.
