Mercury retrograde is an astrological phenomenon that occurs approximately three times per year.
From Earth’s perspective, Mercury appears to move backward through the zodiac for about 3 weeks at a time.
This is an optical illusion caused by the different orbital speeds of Earth and Mercury around the Sun.
Mercury is not actually moving backward. Earth simply overtakes it on the inside, the way a faster train makes a slower one on the next track appear to slide rearward.

How often does it happen?

Mercury goes retrograde three times in most years, each lasting roughly 20 to 24 days.
In total, Mercury is retrograde for about 66 or 67 days a year, roughly 18% of the time. Every year from 2025 to 2028 in the table below adds up to one or the other.

Why the dates never repeat year to year

This is the part almost every retrograde calendar online gets wrong.
Mercury’s synodic period, the time between one retrograde and the next, is 115.88 days.
Three of those come to 347.6 days, which is about 18 days short of a calendar year.
So each year’s retrogrades land roughly 18 days earlier than the year before, and after about five years the whole pattern has walked backward through a full season.
If you ever see a site listing the same calendar dates two years running, it copied the table and changed the year.

Mercury stays inside one sign for the whole of some retrogrades. In July 2025 it turned at 15° Leo and came back to 4° Leo, and in September 2028 it runs from 18° Libra back to 3° Libra, so neither one reaches the sign before.

Treat these as accurate to within a day. Mercury stations at a specific hour, and whether that hour falls on one date or the next depends on your timezone.

Pre-shadow and post-shadow periods:

The effects are said to begin about 2 weeks before the official retrograde (pre-shadow) and linger about 2 weeks after (post-shadow), sometimes called the “retroshade” period.

Past 2028

The table above is tabulated from an ephemeris and stops at the end of 2028. Ask for a later date and the calculator projects from the same retrograde a year earlier, three synodic periods (347.6 days) on.

It does not step forward one synodic period at a time. The gap between one retrograde and the next swings from about 108 to 125 days, because Mercury’s orbit is lopsided, so a single step from September 2028 lands on January 13, 2029, six days after the real January 7 station.
The same-season projection lands on January 6. Tried on the tabled years themselves, it is within 3 days one year out and about 5 days three years out, so it stops at the end of 2031.

It still cannot tell you which sign Mercury will be in. Those answers are labelled as estimates in the result, so you always know which kind you are looking at.
