Almost everyone underestimates moving day, and they underestimate the loading end of it specifically. Carrying boxes down a hallway is slow, tiring work that gets slower as the day goes on, and the truck has to be packed properly rather than just filled. Unloading is genuinely faster, usually about two thirds of the loading time, because nothing has to be wrapped and nothing has to be stacked to survive a drive.

Those assume everything is already boxed and sitting where you can reach it. If you are still taping boxes shut when the truck arrives, add hours, not minutes.

Why more helpers does not scale the way you expect

Two people take half as long as one, roughly. Six people do not take a sixth as long. Doorways, staircases and the truck ramp are single-file, so past three or four movers people start queueing rather than carrying, and somebody has to keep directing traffic. The model here divides the work by crew size and then adds back a growing coordination penalty, which is why the tenth helper saves you far less than the third did.

The practical sweet spot for most homes is three or four. Beyond that, extra bodies are more useful unpacking at the other end, or watching children, than they are in the carry line.

Drive time assumes 45 mph average. That is deliberately below the speed limit: a loaded rental truck is slower up hills, slower to stop, and you will want at least one break. For anything over about 400 miles, stop treating it as one day. The timeline will tell you it finishes at three in the morning, which is technically true and practically useless.

Worked example. A 3-bedroom home, 30 miles, three helpers. Base loading is 6 hours for two people, so 12 person-hours. Split across three and adjusted for coordination that comes to about 4.2 hours. Driving is 30 ÷ 45, or 0.7 hours. Unloading is 65% of loading, about 2.8 hours. Add an hour of buffer and the day runs 8.7 hours: start at 7am, finish at 3:40pm. That is exactly what the calculator returns for those inputs, so you can check it line by line.

One thing no timeline can model: the last 10% of a house takes 30% of the time. The odd lamp, the half-empty cleaning cupboard, the things that live under the sink. Budget the buffer hour and expect to use it.
