A plant watering schedule calculates how often and how much to water based on plant type, pot size, soil type, light exposure, and environmental conditions. Overwatering is the leading cause of houseplant death; underwatering is far easier to recover from.
Core formula: Watering Frequency = Base Interval × Environment Modifier × Season Modifier
Water volume per watering: Water Amount = Pot Volume × 0.25 to 0.33 (Water until a little runs out of the drainage hole. That is the signal the whole root zone is wet rather than just the top inch, which is what a small daily splash actually achieves.)
What each variable means:
- Base Interval: days between waterings for that plant under standard indoor conditions, meaning medium light, around 70°F, moderate humidity.
- Environment Modifier: heat and bright light dry soil faster; a cool, dim room slows it right down. A radiator under a windowsill can halve the interval on its own.
- Season Modifier: growth slows in winter and most plants want 25 to 50% less water. This is the adjustment people forget, and January is when houseplants drown.
- Pot Volume: a 6-inch pot holds roughly 1 quart, an 8-inch about half a gallon, a 10-inch about a gallon.
Base watering intervals by plant type:

The calculator uses the midpoint of each range and then adjusts it for your pot size, season and light, so the number it gives you will usually sit somewhere inside the range above rather than on it.
Worked example: A Pothos in a 6-inch pot (1 quart capacity) in a bright indoor room during summer.
Base interval: 8 days at the midpoint. A small pot dries faster (×0.75), summer growth drinks more (×0.75), and a bright warm spot evaporates more (×0.8), which lands on every 4 days. Water amount: 1 quart is 4 cups, and 4 × 0.30 = 1.2 cups, roughly 300 mL per watering.
Move the same plant to a cool winter windowsill and the multipliers reverse: 8 × 0.75 × 1.4 × 1.3 comes out at about 11 days. Same plant, same pot, nearly three times the interval. That is why a fixed weekly schedule drowns houseplants every January.
Soil dry test: Insert a finger 2 inches into the soil. Dry at that depth means water now. Still damp means wait two or three days and check again. The finger beats the calendar every time, and the schedule below is best treated as a reminder to go and check rather than an instruction to pour.
