Service Tipping Guide Calculator

A tip is a discretionary payment added on top of the base bill to reward good service. The standard formula is simple, but knowing the right percentage for each service type is the real skill.

Formula: Tip Amount = Bill Total × Tip Percentage Total with Tip = Bill Total + Tip Amount Tip Percentage = Tip Amount ÷ Bill Total × 100

What each variable means:

• Bill Total: the pre-tax subtotal (some people tip on pre-tax; others tip on the full amount including tax, both are acceptable).
• Tip Percentage: varies by service category and quality.

Standard tipping rates by service type:

• Full-service restaurant: 15% adequate, 18% good, 20% great, 25% exceptional
• Buffet restaurant: 10% (the server still brings drinks and clears plates)
• Bar / bartender: $1–2 per drink, or 20% of the tab
• Coffee / counter service: $1 per order, or 10–15%
• Food delivery: 15–20% of the order, with a $3–$5 floor on small orders
• Hair salon / barber: 15–20% of the service cost
• Taxi / rideshare: 10–15% of the fare
• Hotel housekeeping: $3–$5 per night, left daily
• Valet parking: $3–$5 when they bring the car back
• Spa / massage: 15–20% of the service cost

Two of those are flat rates, and that changes the arithmetic. Valet and housekeeping do not scale with your bill. The person bringing your car round has done the same work whether you are staying in a $90 motel or a $900 suite, so the tip is a dollar figure, not a percentage. This calculator treats them that way, and ignores the bill amount when you pick one.

Leave housekeeping money daily, not at the end. Different people clean the room on different days, and a single envelope on checkout goes to whoever happens to be working that morning. This is the single most common tipping mistake in hotels, and it is the one that costs someone real money.

Worked example: Dinner bill before tax: $85.00. You received excellent service and want to leave 22%.

Tip = $85.00 × 0.22 = $18.70 Total = $85.00 + $18.70 = $103.70

Quick mental math trick: Calculate 10% (move the decimal left one place), then add half of that for 15%, or double the 10% figure and subtract a little for 18–20%.

For a $60 bill: 10% = $6.00 → 20% = $12.00 → 18% ≈ $10.80.
