Pleat Fabric Calculator

Pleat fabric calculation determines how much extra fabric you need to create pleats in a garment. Pleats fold fabric back on itself, so you always need more fabric than the finished measurement.

The formula:

Total Fabric = Finished Width + (Pleat Depth × Fold Multiplier × Number of Pleats)

The finished width already covers every scrap of fabric you can see, so the only thing left to add is what disappears behind the folds.

The fold multiplier depends on the pleat type:

• Knife pleats: 2. The fabric turns back on itself once, so a 1.5 inch deep pleat swallows 3 inches.
• Box pleats: 4. Two folds turn away from each other, so the same 1.5 inch depth swallows 6.
• Inverted pleats: also 4. Identical to a box pleat in fabric terms, just turned round so the folds meet at the front instead of the back.

Typical fullness for a fully pleated garment:

Read that table as a result, not a setting. Those multipliers are what you land on when the depth and the number of pleats are chosen sensibly for the garment, and nothing stops you from choosing otherwise. Twenty box pleats at an inch and a half deep on a thirty inch waist comes to 5× the finished width, which is a heavy kilt rather than a skirt. The calculator reports the fullness you have actually asked for and tells you which depth would bring it back into the range above.

What the variables mean:

• Finished width: the final measurement of the pleated area (e.g., waist circumference for a skirt)
• Pleat depth: how deep each fold goes behind the surface. Deeper pleats use more fabric but create a fuller look.
• Pleat width: the visible space between pleats on the surface

Practical example (Imperial): A skirt with a 30-inch finished waist in knife pleats needs about 30 × 3 = 90 inches (2.5 yards) of fabric width. In metric, a 76 cm waist needs 76 × 3 = 228 cm (2.3 meters).

Tips: Always make a test pleat in scrap fabric first to verify the depth and spacing look right before cutting your good fabric. Add seam allowances on top of the pleat calculation. Heavier fabrics like wool hold pleats well, while lightweight fabrics may need pressing or stitching to keep pleats sharp.
