Train vs. plane comparison involves multiple dimensions beyond just ticket price: total door-to-door time, combined costs (transportation + meals + baggage + transfers), carbon footprint, and comfort factors. A full comparison requires calculating each metric separately.
Total cost formula: Total Trip Cost = Ticket + Baggage Fees + Transit to/from Station/Airport + Meals + Parking
Door-to-door time formula: Total Travel Time = Transit to Departure Point + Check-in/Security + Travel Time + Transit from Arrival Point
Carbon emissions (approximate):
- Short-haul flight: 255 g CO₂ per passenger-km
- High-speed rail: 14 to 41 g CO₂ per passenger-km
- Conventional rail: 41 to 80 g CO₂ per passenger-km
- Rail is roughly 6 to 18 times less carbon-intensive than flying
Enter a distance and the calculator uses 255 g for the flight and 35 g for rail, a mid-range figure between high-speed and conventional. The rail number moves a lot with the electricity behind it: French rail runs on nuclear and comes in far below 35, while a diesel branch line is nearer the conventional top end. The flight figure is steadier, and short-haul is the worst case per kilometre because the climb is where most of the fuel goes.
What each variable means:
- Door-to-door time: airports require arriving 1.5–2 hours early; train stations typically 15–30 minutes; add transit time at both ends
- Baggage: checked bag on budget airlines: $30–$80; trains generally allow large luggage free
- City-center advantage: train stations are typically downtown; airports are 15–45 minutes outside city centers, adding $20–$80 in taxi/transit costs each way
- Comfort factor: trains have more legroom, walking space, no seatbelt requirements, no altitude effects; work-friendliness is higher on trains
Worked example: London to Paris.
Plane (budget carrier):
- Ticket: £80, Checked bag: £35, Gatwick Express (both ends): £20 + €15, Arrive 2hr early, flight 1.5hr, CDG to Paris centre: 45min
- Total cost: ~£155, Total time: ~5.5 hours door-to-door
Eurostar train:
- Ticket: £99 (standard), No baggage fee, St Pancras to central London: 20min, Paris Nord central: immediate
- Total cost: ~£99, Total time: ~3.5 hours door-to-door (including 30min before departure)
Result: Train is £56 cheaper and 2 hours faster door-to-door. London to Paris is about 450 km, so on the figures above that is 115 kg of CO₂ by air against 16 kg by rail, roughly 86% less.
For distances under 500 km (300 miles) with a decent rail link, trains almost always win on both time and cost, and the reason is entirely the overhead. The flight itself is quicker every time. It is the two hours at the airport and the taxi from a field outside the city that hand the race to the train.
