When to Arrive at the Airport (TSA Wait Calculator)

Find out when to leave for the airport based on your flight type, TSA screening, and crowds.
Covers PreCheck, Clear, and standard security lanes.

Recommended Arrival Time

TSA (Transportation Security Administration) security wait time estimation helps travelers determine when to arrive at the airport to avoid missing their flight due to security line delays. Wait time depends on the airport, terminal, time of day, day of week, season, and whether you have TSA PreCheck or CLEAR.

How this calculator estimates your arrival time: Rather than guess a live security line, it uses the standard recommended lead time before departure, then adjusts for how you get through security:

Flight Regular screening TSA PreCheck CLEAR + PreCheck
Domestic 2 hours before 90 min before 75 min before
International 3 hours before 2.5 hours before 2 hours before

Recommended arrival = Flight departure − the lead time above. The result also shows when to leave home, assuming about a 30-minute drive.

Checkpoint wait benchmarks (why the lead times differ):

  • Regular lane: 20–45 minutes at busy times (shoes and laptop out, liquids bag separate)
  • TSA PreCheck: 5–15 minutes (shoes and laptop stay in, no liquids bag)
  • CLEAR + PreCheck: 2–5 minutes (biometric ID skips the document-check line)

Lines are worst from 6–9 AM and 4–7 PM, and on Mondays, Fridays, and holiday weekends. A midweek early-afternoon flight usually sees the shortest lines. When you are unsure, use the longer lead time.

Worked example: A domestic flight departing 7:00 AM with regular screening:

  • Recommended lead time: 2 hours
  • Arrive at the airport by: 7:00 AM − 2:00 = 5:00 AM
  • Leave home by (30-minute drive): 4:30 AM

With TSA PreCheck the lead time drops to 90 minutes, so you would arrive by 5:30 AM.
