Airline Luggage Size Limits vary by carrier, but most follow similar standards for carry-on and checked baggage.

How airlines measure luggage: Most airlines use the “linear inches” or “linear centimeters” method: Linear Dimension = Length + Width + Height

Some airlines specify individual maximum dimensions instead.

Standard carry-on limits (most airlines):

• US domestic: 22 × 14 × 9 inches (56 × 36 × 23 cm) including handles and wheels
• International: 21.5 × 15.5 × 9 inches (55 × 40 × 23 cm)
• Budget airlines: may be smaller, check specific airline
• Weight limit: US domestic airlines generally do not weigh carry-ons at all. Everywhere else they do, and the spread is much wider than the “7 to 10 kg” figure people quote

That spread is worth knowing before you pack, because the airline table below spans a factor of three. Emirates and Singapore hold you to 7 kg. Lufthansa allows 8, Air France and KLM 12, EasyJet 15, and British Airways will take 23 kg in the cabin, which is the same as a checked bag on most carriers. Ryanair’s free bag is 10 kg but has to fit under the seat. So “carry-on weight limit” is not one number, and the one that binds you is whichever airline is operating the flight rather than the one whose name is on the ticket.

Standard checked bag limits:

• Linear dimension: 62 linear inches (158 cm) maximum
• Weight: 50 lbs (23 kg) for economy, 70 lbs (32 kg) for business/first class
• Overweight fee: $50-200 for bags exceeding the weight limit
• Oversize fee: $50-200 for bags exceeding the size limit

Airline-specific carry-on dimensions:

• United/Delta/American: 22 × 14 × 9 in (56 × 36 × 23 cm)
• Southwest: 24 × 16 × 10 in (61 × 41 × 25 cm), the most generous of the US carriers
• Ryanair: 15.7 × 9.8 × 7.9 in (40 × 25 × 20 cm), a personal item only unless you pay for more
• EasyJet: 17.7 × 13.8 × 7.9 in (45 × 36 × 20 cm) for the free small cabin bag

Tips:

• Measure the bag with the handle and wheels in place, because both count toward the limit
• Soft-sided bags can sometimes be squeezed to fit, hard-sided cannot
• Always weigh your bag at home before heading to the airport
• Consider a luggage scale (they cost about $10-15 and save you overweight fees)
