Travel power adapter compatibility depends on three electrical specifications: voltage, frequency, and plug type. Using the wrong voltage can permanently damage your devices or create a fire hazard. Using the right adapter but wrong voltage converter leaves your device functioning but potentially overheating.

Most modern devices (laptops, phone chargers, camera chargers) are dual-voltage (100–240V, 50/60Hz). The proof is in the small print on the charger brick or the device’s power supply label, and it takes ten seconds to check.

Step-down transformer required when: Destination Voltage > Device Max Voltage e.g., US device (120V max) in Europe (230V) without transformer = destroyed device

Wattage formula for converter sizing: Required Converter Watts ≥ Device Wattage × 1.25 (25% safety margin for surge capacity)

Device wattage formula: Wattage = Voltage × Amperage (W = V × A)

World voltage and frequency standards:

  • 120V / 60Hz: USA, Canada, and much of the Caribbean
  • 127V / 60Hz: Mexico, and the southern half of Brazil
  • 220–240V / 50Hz: Europe, UK, Australia, most of Asia, Africa, Middle East
  • 100V: Japan alone, and the lowest mains voltage in the world. Eastern Japan including Tokyo runs at 50Hz, western Japan including Osaka at 60Hz, a split dating to the 1890s when Tokyo bought German generators and Osaka bought American ones

Japan is the one people get wrong, because the plug looks American. The socket takes a US plug and then delivers 100V rather than 120V. Nothing gets damaged going that direction, but a hair dryer or a kettle will run noticeably weaker.

Plug type reference:

  • Type A (2 flat blades): USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan
  • Type B (2 flat + 1 round): USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan (newer buildings only)
  • Type C (2 round pins): the Europlug. Most of Europe, plus South America, Asia, Africa. It is the most widely accepted plug in the world and fits Type E, F, H, K and N sockets as well as its own
  • Type D (3 large round pins): India, Sri Lanka, Nepal
  • Type G (3 rectangular pins): UK, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia
  • Type I (2 or 3 flat angled): Australia, New Zealand, China, Argentina
  • Type L (3 round pins in a line): Italy, Chile

What each variable means:

  • Adapter (plug adapter): only changes the plug shape; does NOT convert voltage. Safe only for dual-voltage devices.
  • Voltage converter/transformer: actually converts the voltage. Required for single-voltage devices.
  • Universal adapter: covers multiple plug types; still does NOT convert voltage.

USB and USB-C: the easy case

Practically every USB charger made in the last decade is 100–240V, and USB-C Power Delivery bricks are universal without exception worth worrying about. If everything you are packing charges over USB, you need a plug adapter and nothing else, anywhere in the world. That covers phones, tablets, headphones, e-readers, watches, and increasingly laptops too.

The awkward items are the ones with a heating element or a motor: hair dryers, straighteners, travel kettles, electric shavers bought for the domestic market. Those are rarely dual-voltage, and they are also the highest-wattage things in the bag, which makes them the worst possible candidates for a converter.

Safety warning

Plugging a 120V appliance into a 220V outlet without a converter will destroy it, and with a heating element it can start a fire. This is not a theoretical risk and it happens most often with hair dryers, because people assume the plug fitting means the power matches. Read the label before it goes in the wall, not after.

Worked example: US laptop charger: 100–240V, 50/60Hz, 65W. Traveling to Germany (230V/50Hz, Type C plugs).

Voltage check: the label reads 100–240V, and Germany’s 230V sits inside that. ✓ Frequency check: the label reads 50/60Hz, and Germany runs at 50Hz. ✓ Plug type: US Type A → need Type A to Type C adapter (no converter needed)

Adapter cost: $5–$15. Converter cost: $25–$80 (not needed here). Packing just a plug adapter is sufficient and safe.
