Meal delivery services and restaurant delivery apps are convenient but carry a significant cost premium over home cooking. Calculating the real per-meal cost exposes the true difference.

Meal delivery total cost formula: Total Cost per Meal = Menu Price + Delivery Fee + Service Fee + Tip + Tax

Hidden fees breakdown:

• Delivery fee: $0–$8 (varies by distance, platform, and subscription status)
• Service fee: 10–15% of subtotal (charged by platform)
• Tip: 15–20% of subtotal (social expectation)
• Small order fee: sometimes added for orders under a minimum

Home cooking cost formula: Home Cook Cost = (Ingredient Cost × Portion Fraction) + Utilities (≈ $0.30–$0.80/meal)

Worked example, a chicken stir-fry: Restaurant delivery version:

• Menu price: $16.00
• Delivery fee: $3.99
• Service fee (12%): $1.92
• Tip (18%): $2.88
• Tax (8%): $1.28 Total: $26.07 per meal

Home-cooked version:

• Chicken (200g): $2.20
• Vegetables: $1.40
• Rice: $0.30
• Oil, sauces, spices: $0.50
• Gas/electricity: $0.40 Total: $4.80 per meal

Cost multiplier: $26.07 ÷ $4.80 = 5.4× more expensive to have delivered.

Annual impact (ordering 3× per week vs. cooking): Delivery: $26 × 3 × 52 = $4,056/year Home cooking: $4.80 × 3 × 52 = $749/year Annual difference: $3,307

Meal kit services such as HelloFresh and Blue Apron sit in between, typically $8 to $12 a serving. You are paying for the shopping and the portioning rather than for someone else to cook.

Two things the arithmetic above leaves out

Groceries produce waste and delivery does not. A household throws away somewhere around a fifth of what it buys, mostly produce that turned before anyone got to it, and that quietly raises the real cost per home-cooked meal. Buying smaller and shopping twice a week costs more per trip and usually less per meal actually eaten.

Cooking also costs time. An hour shopping, plus half an hour most evenings, is roughly five hours a week that delivery buys back. Whether that is worth $60 depends entirely on what else those five hours would have held, and it is not a question a calculator can answer for you.

Where the money actually goes on a delivery order

The menu price is rarely more than about two thirds of what you pay. A $16 dish typically arrives with a delivery fee of $2 to $5, a service fee around 10 to 15% of the subtotal, tax, and a tip of 15 to 20%. That is why entering just the menu prices makes delivery look far closer to cooking than it is. Take the number off the receipt, not off the menu.
